Hair loss treatment: A plant-based oil shown to nourish damaged hair and boost hair growth
Hair loss can occur when dry, damaged strands snap off. Nourish the hair with a plant-based oil, and it may just promote hair growth.
A dermatological review looked into the effects a certain plant-based oil has on hair.
Researchers collaborated from the Department of Dermatology at the Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, in Iran.
They noted that jojoba oil is “highly resistant to oxidation”, has “anti-inflammatory properties” and is “antibacterial”.

The research team added that “jojoba oils exhibit conditioning effects” on hair.
To elaborate, they found that jojoba oil “mitigates protein loss, protects the hair thread, and improves the resistance to breakage”.
Jojoba oil is derived from the seeds of the jojoba plant (simmondsia chinensis).
The shrub is native to southern Arizona, Southern California and northwestern Mexico.
Jojoba oil has an oily composition, so it makes sense how this oil protects hair against dryness, breakage and split ends.
The oil can also moisturise the scalp – as it’s rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin E, Cooper and zinc – helping to remedy dandruff.
There are a number of ways jojoba oil can be added to anyone’s hair care routine.
One way is to warm up the jojoba oil – on top of the stove in a pan – then apply it to the hair, leaving in for 20 minutes before washing out.
The rule of thumb is to only use 1tbsp of warm jojoba oil for short hair and 2tbsp of warm jojoba oil for longer hair.
When washing the jojoba oil out of the hair, do shampoo, condition and rinse the hair.
Health store Holland and Barrett also recognise that jojoba oil can be used to “improve the condition of the hair”.
Their hot oil treatment requires jojoba oil to be placed in a container of hot (not boiling) water, and left until warm.

Once warm, shampoo the hair normally and then massage jojoba oil into the hair and scalp.
The next step is to cover the hair with a warm, moist towel for up to five minutes, before rinsing off the jojoba oil with warm water.
Another way to incorporate jojoba oil into your hair care routine is to simply add between three to five drops to a dollop of shampoo or conditioner before use.
Alternatively, you can use shampoos and conditioners that already contain jojoba oil as one of its ingredients.
Looking after your hair strands is one way to promote healthy-looking and stronger hair.
Stronger strands are less likely to break, meaning less hair is likely to fall out prematurely.
However, male or female pattern baldness is the result of changing hormone levels in the body.
For this type of hair loss, minoxidil is medicated shampoo that helps to promote hair growth – and persistent use is recommended.
