In a study with the US National Library of Health, researchers found that the fibre content in oranges helped to reduce the risk of heart disease in both the developing disease and the more fatal ones.
The study noted: “This review suggests that individuals consuming the highest amounts of dietary fibre found in oranges can significantly reduce their incidence and mortality from cardiovascular disease.
“Mechanically these beneficial effects may be due to dietary fibre’s actions on reducing total serum and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.”

According to nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer: “Vitamin C helps to lower cholesterol levels by promoting the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids. Antioxidants in general also lower cholesterol by protecting circulating LDL (bad cholesterol) particles from oxidation so they return to the liver for recycling rather than contributing to furring up of the arteries.”
In the book, “Eat better, Live Longer: Understand What Your Body Needs to Stay Health”, its recommended eating at least one orange, grapefruit, lemon or lime a day.
“Citrus fruits contain antioxidant polyphenols and vitamin C which protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals”, added Dr Brewer.
Consuming enough vitamin C can help a person maintain skin health and appearance too.
